DTOC Supports MS Scholars Program – 2015

dtoc-donates-to-ms-scholarsMississippi Scholars is a state program developed by the Mississippi Economic Council that partners with public education in Mississippi.  The goal is to encourage and motivate all high school students to complete a defined, rigorous academic course of study that prepares them for successful transition to college, university coursework or vocational and technical training necessary to enter today’s competitive job market.

In 2014, the EMBDC recognized 156 students in Meridian and Lauderdale County public schools as Mississippi Scholar graduates. Each student recognized receives a medallion, a certificate and a small scholarship that they can use toward college. The stated goal is to increase both the number of students recognized in Lauderdale County, but to also increase the scholarship amount to $250 per student or more.

The Downtown Optimist Club has made a commitment to support this educational effort and as such President Brian Koroknay presented Director Debbie Mathis with a check for $1,000 to be used for scholarships awarded to students.
