Downtown Optimist Club (DTOC) President Brian Koroknay announced today that long time club member, Scott Gray, was selected to receive the DTOC Friend Of Youth Award for 2014-2015. The DTOC Friend Of Youth Award was created to highlight and promote the work of community members who have gone above and beyond to help and support the youth in Meridian and Lauderdale County.

Koroknay explained at today’s meeting of the Downtown Optimist Club that Scott Gray had been chosen because over the past 20 years, he has always coached, mentored and guided the youth of Meridian toward their full potential. Gray said he had coached almost every youth sport out there as well as being a Deb Dad. And, as an Eagle Scout and a Scoutmaster, Gray has helped many Boy Scouts along their way to achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and in later life becoming Scoutmasters themselves.

Gray said he tries to teach kids “skills, physical development, and game theory. And, when I can get through to them I try to be a Life Coach for them. There is a time and place for everything. They learn to play like they practice and that character takes a life time to build and just one bad decision to destroy.”

Gray has been active in the MS Scholars program and gives presentations about the program to 8th graders in local schools and he also speaks to Juniors & Seniors about economics and DECA.

Scott Gray is an Agent/Owner at Insurance Solutions of Mississippi and has been in the insurance business for 20 years. Gray said his focus is property and casualty insurance which insures your business and home against damage or liability.

The DTOC will be making a$250 donation in Scott’s name split between the Choctaw Area Council of Boy Scouts and the Deb Social Service Club.

  1. DTOC, Thank you so much! This was a surprise and it goes a long way toward keeping me active in the volunteer efforts…. Boy Scouts, High School Soccer and the Debs Social Service Club are all worthy opportunities to influence the next generation. Jesus left us but with one command, in my opinion, and that was to LOVE others, and service is a great witness in doing so…. DTOC serves our community and we are lucky to have it doing what it does!
